What Dogs Teach Us About Living in the Moment
And the Teacher of the Year Award Goes To…
We live in a time when there are so many different ways to learn—a physical or online school, YouTube, books, AI (artificial intelligence) platforms, and more.
However, there is one remarkable teacher we may have overlooked: the one with the floppy ears, wagging tail, and wiggling body.
Yep—your own dog!
Our dogs can’t speak our language, but they are intelligent enough to communicate their needs and fears. Even more amazing, they seem to have a sixth sense that allows them to understand our needs and emotions as well.
Nothing Like the Present
We often live our lives like a hamster on a wheel, don’t we?
On most days, relaxation feels like a luxury that exists only in our imagination. Between work, family responsibilities, household chores, and the occasional social gathering, life rarely slows down.
We worry about the future while regretting parts of the past, often feeling nostalgic for days gone by. Ironically, those “good old days” were probably spent worrying about today.
It’s a vicious cycle.
Our dogs, on the other hand, live completely in the present.
They don’t spend their days thinking about the rabbit they didn’t catch or the squirrel that escaped up a tree. They’re happy simply because they’re spending time with the people they love—right now.
Have you ever noticed those gentle nose nudges while you’re working? Or the barking that seems to come just when you’re deeply focused?
Those moments aren’t random.
Your dog is saying:
“Hey! Take a break. Let’s play. Let’s snuggle.”
And after you do, don’t you almost always feel better?
Dogs remind us not to take life quite so seriously.
They encourage us to live in the present and show us that today’s ordinary moments are often the memories we’ll treasure most tomorrow.
Joy With
out Achievements
Have you ever seen a dog celebrating because they ran faster than another dog?
Or counting how many steps they took in a day?
Neither have I.
Dogs find joy in life’s simple pleasures.
While setting goals is important, we often tie our happiness to achieving them. We rarely do something simply for the joy of doing it.
Imagine how freeing life would feel if we did.
What if simply being present was enough?
In a world dominated by cell phones and computers, what would it be like to put those devices aside and enjoy genuine, meaningful conversations?
It’s wonderful to take photos, but sometimes we can simply store those moments in our hearts.
I grew up without carrying a camera everywhere I went, except on vacations. Looking back, I can still picture those wonderful moments. I can still hear the laughter and remember the smiles on the faces of family and friends.
Sometimes, even when we have photographs, we miss everything else that was happening around us.
Back then, we made true connections—just as our dogs continue to do every single day.
Perhaps they understand relationships better than we do.
The Best Lesson of All
We may have taught our dogs commands, but even during life’s most difficult moments, they continue teaching us one important command:
Stay.
Stay present.
Stay focused on this moment.
The life we’re constantly searching for may be the one our dogs are already living.
They don’t wish for more time.
They don’t dwell on yesterday.
They don’t worry about tomorrow.
They simply find joy in today.
Perhaps that can be enough for us, too.
So maybe it’s time to give your dog the “World’s Greatest Teacher” award…
…and perhaps a slice of apple, too.
